The School for Good and Evil

by Soman Chainani

Every year two children are abducted by the School Master. One of the children is to be sent to the School for Good, and the other child is to be sent to the School for Evil. This year, Sophie is anticipated to be taken for the School of Good. After all, Sophie spends numerous hours pampering her face with a variety of “beauty products” and wears pink dresses (the standard for all princesses). Agatha, Sophie’s best friend, seems a natural fit for the School for Evil, as she is despised by nearly everyone, lives in a graveyard, and wears black. The day of the kidnapping, Agatha and Sophie are whisked by the School Master out of Gavaldon and into the land of the School for Good and Evil. However, Sophie and Agatha are nonplussed when they find their fortunes reversed. The School Master releases Agatha into the School for Good and drops Sophie into the School for Evil. Sophie and Agatha both attempt to switch schools, but their attempts go futile. Stuck in each of their schools, Sophie and Agatha fail miserably at their classes. At first sight, Sophie falls in love with Tedros, who belongs to the School for Good, but it is unlawful for a Never (a student in the School for Evil) to fall in love at all, let alone with an Ever (a student in the School for Good). Sick and tired of their schools, Sophie and Agatha assent to visit the School Master and implore him to return them to Gavaldon. The School Master is not persuaded, but he gives Sophie and Agatha a riddle: What’s the one thing Evil can never have . . . and the thing Good can never do without? In the School Master’s office the Storian, a magical pen, begins writing Sophie and Agatha’s fairytale, a very rare event. In their separate schools, Sophie and Agatha ponder about this riddle throughout their studies. Agatha studies diligently and earns one of the top rankings in the School for Good. One day after much pondering, Agatha fathoms the answer to the riddle: love. Agatha shams sickness, so she is quarantined in her room. She sneaks into The School for Evil and feeds Sophie all the answers to Sophie’s homework, earning Sophie a first place rank. Agatha knows that if Sophie makes Tedros show Sophie an act of true love, Agatha and Sophie could return to their beloved home. Sophie commences teaching beauty classes to Nevers to impress Tedros. Tedros falls for Sophie, but Sophie postpones the act of true love. That’s when Agatha realizes that Sophie doesn’t want to go home. Days pass by and the Trial by Tale nears. In the Trial by Tale the top fifteen students from each school will each go into the Blue Forest with danger lurking around the corners. The goal is to survive the longest in the Blue Forest. Agatha would have been selected, but Agatha had pretended to be sick. Sophie and Tedros are both selected to participate in the Trial by Tale. Sophie, however, knows that she would surely fail in the Trial by Tale without Agatha’s persistent help. Agatha disguises as an animal and helps Sophie survive the mortal dangers in the Blue Forest. At the end of the competition Tedros finds himself in peril. Agatha, not Sophie, decides to save him, and Tedros understands that Sophie is not his true love. Heartbroken, Sophie begins having Nemesis Dreams, something that one can only have if he or she is evil. Sophie soon finds out that Agatha is her nemesis, and Sophie wouldn’t be satisfied until Agatha was dead. In the interim, Agatha wishes to be beautiful and one of her teachers grants that wish. Tedros sees the goodness and beauty inside of Agatha and chooses Agatha as his princess for the Snow Ball. Back at the School for Evil, Sophie is now completely transformed into evil. Battle rages on between the Evers and the Nevers, Agatha barely missing being killed by Sophie each time. Enraged, Sophie storms into the School Master’s office to kill the Storian, as she knows that it controls their actions. Sophie encounters the School Master, who is believed to be an Ever. Nevers believe that this is the reason for why Evers emerge triumphant in every fairytale. The School Master is actually a Never, and he asks Sophie to be his true love. He does this to prove that Nevers can win fairytales, and that evil can show love. Sophie, regaining her senses, refuses. Agatha hauls Sophie out of the School Master’s office and races out, with the School Master behind them. The School Master tries to shoot Agatha to reclaim Sophie, but she steps in front of Agatha and is killed herself. Agatha weeps over Sophie’s death, and something magical happens: Sophie restores to life with all of her beauty. The spirit of the Ever brother of the School Master appears, and he slays the evil School Master. It suddenly strikes Agatha that Sophie is her true love, and Sophie sacrificed herself for Agatha, an act of true love. In a flash of blinding light Sophie and Agatha vanish.

The Watsons go to Birmingham

By Christopher Paul Lewis
The Watsons live in Flint, Michigan in 1963. All around town they are known as the "Weird" Watsons all because of Byron, a thirteen-year-old juvenile delinquent. He causes so much trouble that Mr. and Mrs. Watson consider sending him to live with Grandma Sands in the deep down south of Alabama. At this time in the south, segregation was dramatically increasing. Byron had been abusing his privileges, so his parents finally said that the whole family would be taking a road trip in the Brown Bomber to Grandma Sands in Birmingham for the entire summer. This experience totally changed how Byron behaved. He actually started to become nicer, more gentle, and recognize his family's feelings. Just as the trip started to seem better, a bomb went off at the church where Joetta was going to Sunday School. This incident affected the whole family very deeply because Joetta could have been killed just because of her race. Read about how the Watsons were surprised by the chain of events on their trip to Birmingham in 1963 and how their perspective on the world changed after they returned back home to Flint, Michigan.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Scout Finch is the daughter of Atticus Finch, a lawyer. One fateful summer, Atticus gets a case to defend Tom Robinson, an African American field worker. Tom’s case is a difficult case to defend, and to make matters worse, the Ewells, a large family that lives near the dump, are determined to win the case against Tom Robinson at any cost. Throughout the year, Jem, Scout’s older brother, and Scout face Mrs. DuBose, a judgmental person determined to break Jem; taunts from their school mates; and threats from the Ewells, themselves. The one few bright spots in the year is Dill. Dill is the neighbor’s nephew. Dill becomes friends with Jem and Scout. Dill also discovers the mysterious tale of Arthur Radley, and he becomes obsessed with trying to see Arthur Radley before Arthur dies. Tom Robinson is found guilty in the trial, but he has a chance of living until he runs away from jail and is shot and killed. In the end of the story, Mr. Ewell attacks Scout and Jem with a knife after the trial, and Jem ends up breaking his arm. Mr. Ewell is killed in the struggle by Arthur Radley, and Mr. Arthur Radley carries Jem home. Scout is shocked to find that Mr. Radley has finally come out of his house. Scout and Arthur Radley become friends.
Note: I figured out that this book is called To Kill a Mockingbird because it is considered a sin to shoot a mockingbird because all they do is sing for your delight. Tom Robinson's innocence represented the mockingbird and it was very wrong to kill him.

Young Samurai: The Way of the Warrior
By Chris Bradford
Abandoned. Alone. These two words describe Jack Fletcher, an inexperienced 12 year old on the legendary island of Japan. With the rest of his crew on the ship that took him from England to Japan dead, Jack must learn how to fend for himself in a foreign country where all the people are odd. Jack's luck takes a turn as he is adopted by a samurai named Masamoto-sama. However, Masamoto's son, Yamato, hates Jack intensely for trying to take over his spot as the "perfect son". Even with Yamato's negative comments about Jack, Jack is able to become a true samurai. Masamoto sees this potential in Jack, and he immediately places Jack in the Niten-Ichi Ryu. At the Niten-Ichi-Ryu, he makes many friends. Sadly, along with companions came a few enemies. There was a racist boy named Kazuki in his classes that believed that only Japanese people deserve to be taught the arts of a samurai. Jack suffers the whole year from mental and physical bullying coming from Kazuki and his gang-mates. One time, Kazuki caught Jack and taunted Yamato, saying, "Is this gaijin [barbarian] your brother? Save him!" Yamato decided to leave Jack at the mercy of Kazuki. However, at that time, Masamoto came out of the building, and he creamed Kazuki. After that, Masamoto wheels up on Yamato and says, "Where is your dignity? You are no Masamoto." These harsh words took its toll on Yamato. The very next day, he ran away in shame of disgracing the family. Jack's next few days are pain-free, but he also feels like a part of him is missing after losing his only brother. A few weeks later, Masamoto-sama says that he would like to test the strength of the school. He announces that he would like to have a Taryu-Jiai [contest between schools] with another school called the the Yagyu-Ryu. At this contest, there is a test of wrestling, sword-fighting, and archery. The three participants from the Niten-Ichi-Ryu are Jack, Akiko, and Saburo. However, Jack is startled by the other team's players. They were Moriko, Goru, and Yamato. Jack was very confused. Why was Yamato on the other team? However, the procession could not be stopped with this question. In the first round, the Niten-Ichi Ryu wins, barely. Sadly, in the next round, Yagyu Ryu destroys Niten-Ichi Ryu. It all comes to the final round. The first battle, Akiko versus Moriko, ended in a win for the Niten-Ichi Ryu. However, in the second round, Saburo versus Goru, Saburo completely fails and makes it one to one. The final round, Jack versus Yamato, the battle of brothers, decides the winner. In a neck and neck battle, Jack drives the sword at Yamato's neck. However, Jack stops himself because he was his brother. The match ended in a deadlocked tie. The final round, overtime, was a game of absolute courage. The rules were the following: climb up a steep, slick cliff, run inside a cave of wild beasts, and bring back the sword of Jade. Jack and Yamato both make it up the hill, but Yamato slips and falls down the waterfall. Jack drops the Jade sword, and plunges into the water with him. With this act of kindness, Yamato's heart became one with Jack and all ended happily ever after, or did it?

It all began with the cold massacre, a mass killing by The Enemy in the mountainous caves. The mages had fought this enemy for years, but none had ever succeeded in defeating the powerful mage. For years, the mages had tried to find a Makar who was a mage that could kill The Enemy. This mage had a strong power in the element of chaos. It all started when Call was in the room for his final test. Call's dad had told him over and over to fail the tests and come home. He had exploded a ball point pen, blew up an exercise ball, and didn't have a respectful reputation with the high-ranked mages. When Master Rufus said Call's name to be one of his mages, he was shocked. His dad had thrown him a knife just as Call was being taken away to the school for the young apprentices, the Magisterium. He did not sleep well that night. He was in a group with an athletic boy named Aaron and a tall girl named Tamara. Master Rufus made his apprentices sort grains of sand for fourteen days straight until they were taken into a dome to fight elements. Master Rufus's group successfully defeated the elements causing an eruption of applause from the audience of mages. Later that day, he went to Master Rufus' office to call his dad. He contacted his dad quickly and hung up. He searched through the stacks of papers on the Master's desk and found a packet with his dad's name printed on the front. He ripped it apart and read the letter. It stated that Call's magic should be bound by the end of the year or his magic could affect everyone on the campus. He took the note and ran out of office, but was stopped by a voice behind him. He turned around to find a lizard talking directly at him. He quickly took the lizard with him and released him out into the Magisterium. The next day, he and his group members were confronted by the same lizard. He had been devoured by the fire element and turned into a lizard! They quickly escaped the grasp of the lizard and headed out the doors of the magisterium. Master Rufus had also lead everyone out into the woods to search for a missing member, Drew. The search parties later found him on a tree trunk with a broken ankle. As Call rushed Drew back to the Magisterium for treatment, a pack of chaos-ridden wolves attacked the search parties. Aaron used his powers of chaos and quickly killed the wolves. Master Rufus had found his Makar. A true power of chaos magic. A few days passed without Aaron in their room. After Aaron returned, he went missing again. Call had tracked Aaron to be in the abandoned bowling alley. He quickly rushed with Tamara to save Aaron. Drew was talking to the dangling Aaron, and he had a chaos element in his hand. That meant certain death for Aaron. Call charged through the door, and he distracted Drew as Aaron was dragged onto the ceiling by Tamara. Drew released the chaos element which devoured Drew instead of Call. He went through the doors leading into a laboratory, and before him stood The Enemy. Call began to summon all his magic but was stopped short when he heard the voice of Master Joseph. Master Joseph explained to Call that he was acting as The Enemy and that call was the real Enemy. He said that The Enemy's body had grown very old, but his soul was still young and powerful. He gave his body to the only living baby in the Cold Massacre. Call. After the news had settled in Call's mind, they held a graduation ceremony. Master Rufus explained that this was a very important ceremony to become mages because your magic could never be bound. Call received his graduation and smiled. He had the most powerful magic in the world, and it could never be contained.

Point Blank

Anthony Horowitz

In the book Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz the action all starts when the American billionaire, Michael J. Roscoe was murdered in New York by a contact killer simply known as The Gentleman. Alex Rider is a normal fourteen year old boy living in London. He likes soda, watching T.V., and despises homework! Alex is a normal kid except for one thing, he works for MI6. One day Alex gets into big trouble with the police when he tries to stop a drug dealer. As he is being questioned by the police a familiar man walks into the room and says, "Alex, we need you." The familiar face is Alan Blunt, the director of MI6. Alan briefs Alex on the mission. He has already enrolled Alex into a school for delinquent children from wealthy families called Point Blank. His purpose is to go undercover and investigate on the reports of the murdered billionaire Michael Roscoe. Michael Roscoe's son attends Point Blank. Alex must find out if the school has anything to do with his death. Alex was given a false identity, and sent to live with a wealthy family for a few weeks before becoming a boarder at Point Blank. He had to stay with his new family for a week in order to get acclimated with this type of lifestyle. When Alex arrived at the house of his new family, he knew that fitting in with the upper class would be difficult. The owner of the house and his new found father was Mr. Friend. Mr. Friend's wealth came from owning a chain of grocery stores through out England. The week was long and hard for Alex. At the end of the week, Friday, a very muscular woman named Mrs. Stellenbosch's helicopter landed in the front yard, picked Alex up and took him to Point Blank. Mrs. Stellenbasch is the co-directer of the school. When he arrived, he noticed there were no roads, the school was located on top of a mountain and the only way to come and go was by helicopter or by skis. Everything as far as the eye can see was covered in snow. Alex also noticed that the school had four floors and a basement. When the helicopter landed Alex and Mrs. Stellenbosch walked inside the school and into the directors office, his name was Dr. Grief. Dr. Grief explained to Alex the school rules and briefed him on the other students. Dr. Grief also mentioned that the third and forth floor and the basement were off limits to all students. There were six boys attending Point Blank. Since Alex was there on a mission he decided it was important to take a look around. He sneaks down the schools corridors and comes across an operating room. As he enters the room, he hears someone's feet shuffling so he quickly tries to hide, but had no luck. Dr. Grief takes Alex captive and tells him of his plan of cloning all the students. He also shares with Alex why Michael Roscoe was murdered. Dr. Grief hired someone to kill Roscoe because when his son, returned home, his father suspected something was different about him and called MI6 to investigate. Dr. Grief didn't want anyone to spoiled his plans, so he ordered Rosco to be murdered. Alex was putting the pieces of the puzzle together and now he had to escape. When Dr. Grief wasn't busy with the experiments, Alex slipped out of his office and ran back to his dorm room. Alex needed to escape and the only way to do it was to slide down the mountain. He made a makeshift snowboard out of an ironing board and slipped out of the window onto the soft snow. Sliding down the mountain was extremely hard and dangerous but once he made it to the bottom he was met by Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones was Mr. Blunt's assistant. Alex shares his findings with Mrs. Jones and explains what Dr. Grief was doing with cloning the students. Once Alex was finished with his report, Jones told him he must return to Point Blank with a special-ops team and this time his mission was to kill Dr. Grief and save the students. When Alex and the special-ops team arrived, they went to find and save the students first, then Alex took it upon himself to find Dr. Grief. As Alex is roaming the halls he hears a helicopter outside. Alex runs to the nearest door and exits the school. He sees Dr. Grief in a helicopter about to leave. Alex turns around to try to find something to stop the helicopter, but instead finds a snowmobile and redirects it to fly off the snow ramp and hit the helicopter. Surprisingly his plan works. The helicopter blows up & Dr. Grief is dead. The student are saved, the clones are arrested, and Dr. Grief' plan if foiled, or so we think.

The Death Cure
By James Dashner
Thomas wakes up in a white room. The only item in the room that is not white is a desk. For many days he tries to see if the desk contains an item to help him escape. Finally, a door open. Rat Man, Janson's nickname, tells Thomas that Thomas is immune to the deadly disease known as the Flare. Rat Man also tells Thomas that everything WICKED has put them through is to find a cure for the Flare. Soon Thomas was returned to his friends. A while later Rat Man came to speak. He told them that the device that erased their memories will be taken out. Next, he says who is immune to the Flare. Soon Thomas finds out that his friend Newt is not immune and has the disease. When the time for the device to be taken out, Newt, Minho, and Thomas decided to not take the device out and just run away. Before they ran away, Brenda whispered to Thomas that Thomas should only trust Ava Paige. When it was their turn to have the swipe--the memory taking device taken out--they said no. Rat Man told them that tomorrow their friend will convince to have it taken out. Then Newt, Minho, and Thomas attacked. Sadly, the guards stopped them and put them in a white room like the one Thomas was in before. The next day, Rat Man tried to force them to take the Swipe out. When the group came to the room they saw Brenda. Together, they attacked Rat Man and the guards in the room. They quickly headed out, but suddenly the lights went out. The emergency red lights started flashing. They tried to find the room with the Bergs, a plane-like machine. On the way Newt, Minho, Thomas, and Brenda saw guards tied to chairs. They found the weapons room and started collecting the weapons. Newt said that he has to go do something. When he came back he gave a note to Thomas and told Thomas to open the note when the time is right. They soon found the Bergs. They found Jorge, who told them that the other Gladers had left. They headed towards the Berg when the guards came in. They fought off the guard and finally reached the Berg. When Thomas, Newt, Jorge, Brenda and Minho were on the Berg, Brenda told them that the Swipe can control them. The only way to take it out is to go to Dr. Hans. He was in Denver and so were the other Gladers, so they headed to Denver. When they arrived, they had to leave Newt in the Berg because he had the Flare. When they went into the city a man gave them a note. The note said to meet in a certain area. The note was from Gally, a former Glader who was thought to be dead. When they met, Thomas found out that Gally is part of the Right Arm, a group determined to take down WICKED and use the money for something useful. Soon they left and headed to Hans. When Hans was about to take out the Swipe WICKED suddenly controls Thomas. Luckily they were able to take the swipe out. Soon Hans leaves and the group goes back to the Berg. They find out that Newt has been taken to the Crank Place. They go there to retrieve Newt. When they find Newt he tells them to leave and after a while they finally do. On the way back to Denver, Thomas opened the note. It said that Newt wanted Thomas to kill him before he went crazy because of the Flare. Thomas knew that he failed Newt. When they arrived the city was vacant. Soon after arriving Thomas, Jorge, Brenda, and Minho were kidnapped. They were left in a room where the group found many people who were immune to the Flare along with the Gladers. Theresa, one of the Gladers, told Thomas that WICKED was restarting the trials. When the guards came Minho attacked them. He asked why they were being kidnapped. After a while, one of the guards said that they were part of the Right Arm. Thomas demanded to know why the Right Arm was taking munnies, people who were immune to the Flare. The guard agreed to take them to the boss. When they reached there they find Gally and finally find out the plan. They were going to takeover WICKED. They first had to reach a Berg to take them to WICKED. Thomas would have to pretend he came back so they can complete the trials with him. Thomas would then put a device so no weapons would work. Then the Right Arm would take over WICKED. So the plan happened. On the way to the Berg Thomas found Newt and killed him after trying to convince him to come with them. Thomas was dropped off and went in to face WICKED. He did what he was told. WICKED was about to cut Thomas's head open when the Right Arm broke in. Rat Man made him fall asleep so Thomas could not run away. When he woke up he found a note from Ava Paige. It was a map to find the munnies that WICKED captured. He found Brenda, Jorge, Minho, Teresa, and a few of the other Gladers. They went to the end of the Maze and worked backwards. When they finally reached the Glades they took the munnies and lead them out. They were headed out when Rat Man and a few Guards started to attack. The Gladers defeated Rat Man and the guards and escaped through a Flat Trans, a teleportation device. They escaped to a place that seems to be like paradise and destroyed the Flat Trans so no one could follow. The human race was safe.

Dr. Seuss

Mae Woods
This was a very interesting biography about Dr. Seuss. It starts with his birth and ends with the legacy after his death. Although many people know that he was an illustrator and author of several children's books, there are many facts about Dr. Seuss that most people don't know. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904. In his childhood, he had a passion for drawing. However, in college, he was studying to be an English teacher! Helen, his college classmate, always persuaded him to continue his passion for illustrating books and becoming an author. Lucky for us, he did just that. Helen and Dr. Seuss eventually married. He served in World War II and drew political cartoons during that time. After World War II, Dr. Seuss started writing his first books for children. Although he had no children of his own, he really liked children and wanted to write books that would entertain and educate them. His first book was And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. In addition, he wrote famous books such as The Grinch, Horton Hears a Who, and his most recognized book, The Cat and The Hat. Some books were made into movies, such as The Lorax, a movie about the environment and trees. Today, Dr. Seuss continues to have a place on the bookshelves of millions of homes, schools, and libraries. In addition, he inspires many young authors and illustrators around the world. The Eye of Minds

James Dashner

Michael is a boy who likes using the VirtNet, a virtual reality simulation. If you die in the Sleep, being in the VirtNet, you are lifted to the Wake, outside the VirtNet. Michael meets a girl named Tanya who is driven crazy by a gamer named Kaine. She rips out her core, the item that keeps you from dying in the Wake, and jumps off a bridge. In his walk to school in the Wake he is abducted, but soon learns it is actually the VNS, the VirtNet security, who took him. They tell him that he needs to go on a hunt to find the gamer Kaine and so he does. He also learns from the VNS that Kaine has a piece of unknown programming called the Morality Doctrine. Michael starts with his friends Bryson and Sarah to try to find any and all information about Kaine and how to find him. They find out that there is a mostly unknown part of the VirtNet where Kaine hides called the Hallowed Ravine and to reach there they need to go down the Path. They find out that there is a game called Devils of Destruction inside the VirtNet and that the Path starts there. Michael, Bryson, and Sarah go down the Path. The Path basically a horror movie. It starts with a strange purple dimension area where one could get lost very easily. Then a giant floating disk where one must jump through the correct portal. On the disk though, they meet a woman who says that they only have one chance and that if they die they can never come back to the Path. After the floating disk there is an endless hallway where one must figure out that the walls are hollow and need to go through them. Then after going through the wall one has to run in darkness until reaching a pit of sand and falling down. Then there is an almost endless staircase. After that there is a long hallway with still bodies that will move if one speaks or makes an abrupt movement. While going through this Bryson says, "What if Kaine isn't a gamer at all?" After he says that he runs at full speed to the end of the hallway making all of the still bodies run at him and kill him in the VirtNet, not allowing him to come back to the path. Only Sarah and Michael remain and after reaching the end of the hallway they ponder the question. After they reach the exit they meet a man who has sanctuary for people on the Path. He turns out to be the legendary gamer Gunner Skale who mysteriously disappeared from existence since Kaine arrived. While eating dinner with Hunter Skale, Michael and Sarah discover what Bryson had meant; Kaine was a Tangent, a programmed A.I., that had become self aware. Gunner Skale tries to stop them from going down the Path, but they escape narrowly. After this on the Path one must navigate their way out of a volcano. Michael and Sarah are navigating their way through when all of a sudden, a gush of magma shoots out on top of Sarah. She returns to the wake not being able to help Michael. Of what was once a group of three is now only one person, Michael. He crawls through a hole and reaches another portal. He meets a strange robotic being who gives him food and water. On this part of the Path one is given food and water before having their core removed, and after having their core is removed they're given a choice of two doors one leading off the Path, one leading to the Hallowed Ravine. This is the end of the horrors of the Path, but only the beginning of the horrors of the Hallowed Ravine. Michael picks the Hallowed Ravine even though he knows that if he dies, he dies in the Wake as well. He is greeted by a desert and sees a small building. He walks over to it and sees a man who tries to sway Michael form going in, but Michael goes anyway. He seems to have gone through another portal into a castle. He walks along a hallway until he finds Kaine and other Tangents. Michael is seen and is taken away by soldiers in the castle, but as he is being dragged away the VNS break through the castle and a fight breaks out. Michael desperately runs out of the castle and hides behind an oak tree and takes a nap. He wakes up when he realizes that someone is dragging him, they drag him to cottage where he sees Kaine again. Kaine claims that the Path is just a proving ground to see if one is worthy of an experiment that he is holding. He also claims to have wiped Michael's nanny Helga, his mom, and his dad from existence. Michael tries to fight Kaine, but then later decides to run out of the cottage and find the VNS so he can go back to the Wake. He tries to talk to woman who works for the VNS, but she only confuses Michael. She then runs away in terror when she sees that there are KillSims (tangents in the VirtNet that can suck out your Aurora, your being in the VirtNet, and can leave one brain damaged in the Wake), Kaine's creation. Michael is soon overwhelmed. Then realizes that instead of manipulating the code, he can destroy it, and so he does. A cyclone starts that removes the ground, KillSims, and everything around him. It becomes unbearable and he asks Kaine to make it stop and before he Wakes he hears a voice, but can't make out what is says. He Wakes in his coffin and steps into his apartment, only to realize that the apartment isn't his. He runs to the bathroom to check in the mirror and the face he sees isn't his. He then makes out what the voice said, "Check your mail." Michael opens up his NetScreen device still to realize that the NetScreen wasn't his. He opens up an email and he finds out some shocking news. He finds out that he too is a Tangent, a programmed A.I. He also finds out that Kaine implemented the Morality Doctrine and that Michael is inside an actual gamer's body that Kaine deemed unworthy. He also realizes that what he thought the Wake was before, was just another part of the VirtNet. He hears the doorbell ring and opens the door to find a VNS agent standing outside. She talks to him telling him that Bryson and Sarah are real people and that she was also real. She tells him that Michael was used by the VNS to find Kaine. She also explains that he has very much explaining to do to his friends, and with that she leaves.

Once

Morris Gleiztman

Once, a boy found a full carrot in his soup. His name was Felix. He had been left at the orphanage because his parents were Jews and were taken in by the Nazis. Felix doesn't know that though. He began to think why would someone leave a full carrot in his soup. Was it just an accident? Felix settled on the idea that the orphanage left the carrot because his parents were picking him up. He waited, and waited, and waited, but no one came to pick him up. He asked Mother Minka, the orphanage's head director, if his parents were coming to pick him up. Mother Minka did not have the heart to tell Felix that his parents may be dead, so she just kept quiet. Felix eventually ran off thinking that he could find his parents. He went back to his home village. He noticed that his parent's bookshop was different. He went inside without knocking. Nothing. Completely Empty. The room had not been used for years and cobwebs had begun to creep up the walls. Felix decided to revisit his own home. Surely his parents must be there. He knocked three times. Nothing. He then just walked inside the house. A woman quickly pushed him back outside and quickly said, "Wrong house." Felix went to the backyards of the other houses and saw three people laying on the ground. It looked like a family of a mother, father, and a small little girl. The mother and father are dead. This plants seeds of doubt in his mind. What if his parents of are like those people? He quickly goes to check on the small girl. She quickly awakens, and Felix runs off into the wood with her. Her name is Zelda. She complains about her parents all day and night. They run through the woods for two days before seeing a small, rocky road that seems to have recently been used. A car with a Nazi symbol passes and the soldiers inside take quick shots at Zelda and Felix, but they dive in the grass just in time. The next car picks them up and drops them off with another group of people walking on the path. They each had a star around their arm. It was the Jewish star. Many people began to dig trenches while the others walked. They eventually reached a death camp. Many people were screaming, there were gunshots everywhere. A man quickly grabbed Zelda and Felix and dragged them to an abandoned apartment complex. The quickly hid in a room full of other boys and girls. The man's name was Barney. He complimented Felix on his story-telling skills. Barney snuck out at night to do his dentistry work. He asked Felix to come with him to distract the patients as he worked with heavy devices on their teeth. Days passed and Zelda got very sick. She couldn't eat, drink, and she could barely sleep. Barney asked Felix to go get him some medicine one night, and Felix did as he was told. When he came back to the apartment complex, everyone was in handcuffs and being taken away in a truck. He quickly joined Zelda in the truck with the other children and Barney. Other Jews were their too. Felix was very tired and leaned against the wooden wall to hear it crack. Barney and the other men quickly punched a hole out of the wall. There was an open field in front of them. Barney insisted not to jump out of the train. Felix and the other men thought it was a chance worth taking. He joined hands with Zelda, looked down, and jumped. That is when the machine guns began to fire.

When The Butterflies Came

Everyone thinks that Tara lives the most perfect life, but in reality Tara’s world is crumbling into pieces around her. Her beloved Grammy Claire has passed away recently, and Tara is still in melancholy. Riley, Tara’s callous older sister, doesn’t seem to care about Tara at all, screeching along to her favorite band, Kittie, in her bedroom all day long. Mama has mysteriously disappeared again a few days after Grammy Claire’s obsequies. Daddy has left Bayou Bridge for the Hollywood glamour, and there he meets a woman named Crystal and goes off with her. A few days after Grammy Claire’s funeral, dazzling butterflies trail her from time to time, giving Tara something to appease her agony caused by Grammy Claire’s unexpected death. Taara then receives a mysterious letter and a key from Grammy Claire beyond the grave telling her to travel to Grammy Claire’s Victorian house. Butler Reginald, who works for Grammy Claire, drives Tara to Grammy Claire’s antique house, and Riley soon joins them there. At the house Tara discovers that the first key unlocks the secret entrance in the back of the house. While in the bedroom in the house, Tara discovers another detailed note from Grammy Claire herself, which explains the origin of the jewelry box, and a second key, which unlocks a beautifully embellished jewelry box jammed in a drawer. The jewelry box contains a stack of eight intricate keys and two notes from Grammy Claire, explaining that the nipwisipwis (Chuukese word for butterfly) are in grave danger and only Tara can save them. Day by day Tara unlocks each key (Key #3 unlocks Grammy Claire’s bedroom, where Tara meets Angelina [Grammy Claire’s marvelous Giant Pink butterfly]; Key #4 unlocks a photo album filled with pictures of Grammy Claire and Tara over the years; Key #5 unlocks the laboratory filled with Grammy Claire’s research about butterflies; and Key #6 unlocks an old makeup case hidden in the bottom of the stairs filled with $2,000). The clues become harder to decipher and Tara discovers more about the nipwisipwis through the letters. Tara discovers that the Giant Pinks, an endangered species of butterflies, are about to go extinct because of a butterfly murderer. Tara has a suspicion that Madame Erial C., Grammy Claire’s cook, is the butterfly murderer. Tara’s suspicion arises when she sees Madame Erial C. lurking upstairs at midnight. A day after unlocking the makeup case, Tara discovers that Key #7 unlocks Ben’s stall, but Tara discovers that Key #7 unlocking the barn was a decoy to put the butterfly murderer off the trail (Ben was Grammy Claire old horse). The next clue was actually hidden in Grammy Claire’s old boat, along with airline tickets for Mama, Riley, Butler Reginald, and Tara to the island of Chuuk, the native island of the nipwisipwis. Before leaving for the journey to Chuuk, Tara discovers that somebody has stolen the $2,000 in the makeup case! Tara, Butler Reginald, and Riley travel to the island of Chuuk. There Tara finds that Key #8 unlocks Grammy Claire’s tree house laboratory, which contains very little of Grammy Claire’s research. In her stay at Chuuk, Tara meets a boy named Eloni, Grammy Claire’s research assistant. Eloni takes Tara to the laboratory, which is also unlocked by Key #8. The next day Tara goes to the bank and unlocks Grammy Claire’s security box with Key #9. The security box holds an outdated will by Grammy Claire. Tara eventually deciphers that the nipwisipwis possess special talents of creating soft music and understanding humans to some extent! After much deep thinking, Tara discovers that Key #10 unlocks a treasure chest in the Giant Pinks’ cave. The treasure chest is filled with all of Grammy Claire’s formulas and research about butterflies. The most appalling truth of all is that Butler Reginald is the secret butterfly killer. Butler Reginald aspires to harvest the chemical in Giant Pinks that provides eternal youth. The fastest way to harvest the chemical is by killing the naive Giant Pinks. Also, Grammy Claire never actually died! Grammy Claire disguises herself as Madame Erial C., which when spelled backwards is Claire. Grammy Claire shammed a death, so that the butterfly murderer would not suspect Grammy Claire following him. The fact that Grammy Claire is alive and the nipwisipwis are safe brings Tara utter relief and puts Tara out of her anguish and her obligation to save the nipwisipwis.

This is the world where Jonas lives with his only sister, Lily, and his mother and father. It is “perfect”. In his community, children are assigned a job in the community. As Jonas reaches the age of twelve, he grows apprehensive of what his Assignment would be. Jonas has no extreme passion for anything, and he knew that the elders of the community take a person’s passion for a certain job into consideration before giving that person an Assignment. At age twelve, Jonas is not assigned a job like everyone else, but is singled out to receive training from The Giver to become the next Receiver of Memory, a notable Assignment. As the Receiver of Memory, The Giver reveals the true physical and mental pains of life along with joyous moments fraught with bliss. Who was Harriet Tubman?

By Yona Zeldis McDonough

Harriet Tuman was a very brave African-American woman born in 1821. The fact that she was an African-American was a problem at that time because until 1865, African-Americans were slaves. Harriet Tubman was a slave in Maryland who was owned by a man named Mr. Broads. After a long six years of hard work for Mr. Broads, she was sent to work for a woman named Ms. Cook. At one point, Harriet decides to run away because she is tired of being a slave. She thought slavery was wrong. She was trying to get to Pennsylvania, which was a free state where slavery was not allowed. After she made it to Pennsylvania and became free, she went back to try to free her brothers and another man. Because she wanted to help other slaves to get to freedom, she started to conduct the Underground Railroad, a pathway for slaves to escape their owners in the South. One of her hardest trips was when she went back to free her parents and a man named Charlie. This trip was more challenging because of the Fugitive State Law that was passed in 1850. The law stated, "All runaway slaves must be returned to their owners in the South." The fact that this law existed made the trip more dangerous and risky. Who will survive? Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
By J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter is accustomed to neglect, but his letter of acceptance into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry changes his life forever. In Hogwarts, he discovers the details of his parents’ tragic death, and makes new friends. Hermione is an independent and smart girl. Ron is a funny red-haired boy. Harry manages to get rid of a dragon and fight a mountain troll. He also solves the mystery of the third-floor corridor and gets past a three-headed dog. This book is very well written, and the plot has twists at every corner. I would have liked to have learned more about the character Hagrid, but I’m sure readers will learn about his past in one of the other six books. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a great beginning to the Harry Potter series.

Mark of Athena (Book 3)

By Rick Riordan

Warning. If you have not read the first two books of the Heroes of Olympus series do not read this review.
The two camps, Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, finally meet each other after many years, to confront the Prophecy of Seven and close the Doors of Death, but the task will not be easy. Annabeth, Leo, Jason, Piper, and their crazy sytar friend, Coach Hedge, were flying on the Argo II to Camp Jupiter. When they arrive Terminus, the God of boundaries, explodes into the scene and keeps complaining about how the Argo II is a weapon and how weapons are not allowed inside the Pomerian Line, city limits, or at least on Roman soil. So, Annabeth found a loophole and told Terminus that if the Argo II was hovering it was not on Roman soil, therefore she can go down. Terminus agreed. When they landed, Reyna declared a feast. During the feast Ella, a harpy, started saying a prophecy which stated, "Wisdom's daughter walks alone. The Mark of Athena burns through Rome. Twins snuff out the Angels breath, Who holds the key to endless death. Giants' bane stands gold and pale, Won through pain from a woven jail." When she finished Percy tried to make it look like she was just saying something random because he knew that Octavian would torture her into telling him all the prophecies she knew. Also, Annabeth felt the coin in her pocket becoming warmer after she heard the line about The Mark of Athena. After the feast, Octavian and Leo went up to the ship. After a while the Argo II fired at the Romans. Suddenly, the Romans started attacking the Greeks who were largely outnumbered, and Octavian hopped off the ship. Luckily, the Greeks, Jason, Hazel, and Frank were able to reach the ship and flew off. To find out what happens next, what is The Mark of Athena, and to unfold many more surprises read The Mark of Athena, but first I recommend reading the Percy Jackson series and the first two books of The Heroes of Olympus series. This book is intriguing for all Greek and Roman mythology lovers.

The Blood of Olympus

By Rick Riordan
The Blood of Olympus is the last book in the series, Heroes of Olympus. Percy, Frank, Leo, Hazel, Jason, Annabeth, and Piper are all demigods. Demigods are children who have a mother or father as a god, and the other parent is a mortal. Percy is the son of Posiden. Frank is the son of Ares. Leo is the son of Hephaestus. Hazel is the daughter of Hades. Jason is the son of Zeus. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena. Piper is the daughter of Aphrodite. Each one has a special power passed down from their parents. When news broke that Gaea was to awake, the gods decided to take demigods capable of completing the quest and put them together. Leo built a ship called the Argo II and the crew began their journey. After months of traveling on the Argo II, Juno, Zeus's wife, gave the demigods some useful information. The information told how to get to the awakening ceremony. The awakening ceremony was at the Acropolis and the routes were well guarded. The short route was heavily guarded by monsters on both the land and air. The long route was very long, and guarded by fierce gods that couldn't decide if they were Roman or Greek. Juno told the crew to travel the long route and make some quick stops. At one island, Nike was waiting and instructions were to capture her and radiate victory in a plan. Nike did foretell that one demigod must die to defeat Gaea. The second stop was at the birth island of Apollo and Artemis. Apollo gave Leo instructions of where to find his son. Apollo's son had one power that the demigods would need, to raise the dead. After Leo got the serum to raise the dead, they headed to the Acropolis in Athens. The waking of Gaea required the blood of a boy and girl demigod. Piper was cut in the leg and drops of blood hit the floor like raindrops. Percy had a little nosebleed. Drip! The whole Acropolis rumbled at the waking of Gaea. Will the demigods stop the evil Earth Mother? Who will die out of the seven demigods? Read the book and series to find out.

Mandela by Floyd Cooper

"Mandela" by Floyd Cooper, is a short story that describes Nelson Mandela's childhood and journey through apartheid. Mandela was born into royalty of the Thembu tribe, so he was born and bred to lead. Mandela's father served as a great role model to him. His father told him to stand firm in what he believed in, as a young boy, he left his home to study in Mqhekezweni. After studying there, he moved to Johannesburg. In his previous homes, he hadn't experienced nearly as much discrimination as in Johannesburg. He had to live in an area with dirt floors and tin roofs. He had to drink out of African only water fountains, go to African only restroom, and even walk through African only doors! Mandela wanted this to change, so he and a friend started up the first all black law firm in Johannesburg. He fought and fought for African rights. Mandela often went to prison for these acts of rebellion. Finally, Mandela held the first election where Africans could vote, and remade South Africa's constitution. America's Robert E. Lee

During his life, Robert E. Lee has suffered much during the Civil War. Before that, though, Robert E. Lee surpassed almost all his classmates at West Point, and had impressed many generals with his skill during the Mexican War.He had, however, loved the state of Virginia because it was his hometown, and so when Virginia seceded from the Union, Robert E. Lee had to stick to the Confedreacy. In the Civil War, he led valiant armies into battle with a disavantage, a one for two soldier fight. Even with this disavantage, he was able to defeat many generals, with his strageties and tatics. But soon, with a increasing number of three or four against one soldier battle, he soon had to surrender. After the Civil War, he became a president of a Virginian college until he died. Even though he was an enemy against the U.S., he will still be remebered for his bravery and army skills.

In Rosa Parks:The Story of My Life, Rosa Parks talks about her life as a black woman trying to help the blacks gain their freedom. It all began when she sat in the "whites only" section in a bus that she was riding on. When a white man boarded the bus, he told Rosa and the friends that were also sitting with her to leave. Her friends left and went to the black/colored section of the bus even though Rosa just sat still and did not get out of the seat. The man and the bus driver forced Rosa out of the bus. Ever since people heard about this, a boycott started and this plus the help of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., stopped segregation and whites and blacks lived together and it has stayed the same way to this day.

This biography on Barry Bonds gives me some valuable insight on what people thought of him before he was put

to shame by his scandal. Everyone thought he was a hero, son of Bobby Bonds, godson of Willie Mays. Barry has had a lot of support and had a real talent for the game, even before he took PEDs (performance enhancing drugs). He first found his interest for baseball at a very young age, growing up watch his all-star father, win countless honors in the NL (National League). Even though Bobby Bonds was a miraculous talent as well as Bonds, he says his greatest accomplishment was being the son of Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and later went to play for the San Francisco Giants. He was one of only four players to have hit 300 home runs and have 300 steals in their career at the time. The other three people were the following: his father, Willie Mays, and Andre Dawson. Although he was convicted of illegal use of drugs, Barry Bonds was a great player long before he messed up his career.

The Tarantula in My Purse and 172 Other Wild Animals
By Jean Craighead George AR Level 5.4
I love wild animals as much as the next person, but saving 173 animals is absurd. That's what survival book author Jean Craighead George did. Her family had developed a shelter for animals in her house. She saved crows, raccoons, and hawks. The tales of her adventures with animals are sad, funny, and exciting. This counts as an autobiography and is a witty one at that. This written by the author of the Julie of the Wolves series.

Scat by Carl Hiaasen

Over the summer, it was required for the sixth grade to read Flush by Carl Hiaasen. I enjoyed the book very much, so I decided to read Scat. The book is about a boy named Nick Waters that goes to school at a private school named Truman. There is a kid in his class called Smoke, who bit the most feared teacher's, Mrs. Starch, pencil in half. The next day the class goes to Black Vine Swamp, and Smoke does not show up. When they are hiking, they see and hear something moving in the bushes. Was it an endangered panther? There is a wildfire that causes the trip to end early. The kids go in the bus, and Mrs. Starch goes back in the swamp to retrieve Libby's inhaler. She never returned the next day. Nick gets suspicious and is determined to discover what happened to Mrs. Starch with the help of his friend, Marta Gonzales. With a Texas oilman wannabe, his oil factory, an eco-avenger, a psycho singing substitute, and maybe some panthers in the way, will Nick and Marta solve the mystery? What happened to Mrs. Starch? Was the wildfire arson? Does Smoke have something to do with the incident? All these questions will be answered when you read the book.
